Note 229 – The difference between SEO and social media

If SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of getting your content or site to rank well, then social media is the vehicle that can help you share your work and get people linking to it.  Examples of social media sites are Twitter, Facebook, Digg, YouTube and Stumble Upon, but there are many more.

Some people employ an SEO copywriter to optimise their page or blog.  In simplistic terms, all that person or team will be doing is rewriting your content in order to include the most effective keywords.  This content then feeds search engines, such as Google, with exactly what people are searching for (which can only work if the SEO copywriter has done their preparatory work).

So, how do you know which key words to include?

You page shouldn’t be filled with ‘spam-type’ words as this will just turn people away, it just has to include the everyday words and phrases that people are searching for – so it’s important to do your research on key words.  I will be researching a tool that can help you do this which I will blog about in the next few days.

In the meantime, if you want to know more about the social media sites mentioned above, please see links to my previous blogs below:

Note 224 – How using hashtags in Twitter can benefit writers

I was going to post a completely different post today, but after opening an email from Copyblogger.com this morning and reading their article Smart People SEO, I changed focus as it was so interesting. The article I read claimed that if you read Brian Clark’s 27 page report called How to Create Compelling Content “you’ll have that 5% of SEO knowledge that will give you 95% of your desired results”.

Hope you enjoyed today’s blog as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Until tomorrow
