As it’s leap year next year my blog challenge will last for 366 days not 365.  Being blog 66, I make that 300 day to go!  For the background to my writing challenge, please read my first blog by clicking the following link – http://wp.me/p1x6Ui-4. If you would prefer to dive straight into note 66, then please read on…

The present perfect tense

Today I am going to blog about the present perfect tense, which I have touched upon in some previous blogs. John Seely in his book The Oxford A-Z of Grammar & Punctuation explains that present perfect is “A verb tense formed by combining the present tense of the verb to have with the past participle of the main verb.”

Some examples:

  1. She has eaten more this week than last week.
  2. I have washed all the clothes in the washing basket.
  3. Tom is happy in his job and has worked at the company for four years.
  4. I can give her the present on Saturday, assuming it has arrived by then.

You will see from my examples that there are many uses of the present perfect tense.  John Seely would describe examples 1 and 2 as having a “past action with results continuing to the present”, whereas 3 is an example of an “incomplete action or series of actions continuing into the present”.  Example 4 is very different and relates to a future event.

Tomorrow I will prepare something about the past perfect tense.  Please feel free to comment on this blog if you wish and as mentioned before I am happy to take requests on the subject of grammar/punctuationmmar/writing tips or similar.  Hope you have enjoyed your day.

Did anyone spot the present perfect tense in the previous sentence?

Until tomorrow…

About Sandra Madeira

I am a working mum and entrepreneur with a passion for writing, coaching, mentoring and inspiring others. Subjects I tend to blog about are life skills, parenting, decluttering, worklife balance, career etc. I’ve been on a decluttering mission for years creating space in my house, garden and mind. In 2020 I challenged myself to declutter every day for a whole year and write about it daily. After that success I took on a challenge to change my career from accountant to life coach, and in early 2024 set up my own company. I continue to keep up with the decluttering, and now write daily about my home life and coaching business. Have a good day!
