Note 71 – The word ‘but’

The word ‘but’

The word ‘but’ is a coordinating conjunction.  According to John Seely in his book the Oxford A-Z of Grammar & Punctuation, it is used to link together two words (see 1), two phrases (see 2) or two clauses (see 3).

Here are some examples:

1. Sunny but cold
2. Sunny through the window but cold outside
3. It’s a sunny day but it’s cold outside
