Realising that I couldn’t explain the difference between further and farther (without looking it up) this became the subject of today’s blog. Farther is used when talking about distance, whereas further is used for everything else, according to The Little Red Writing Book by Brandon Royal.
Oxford Dictionaries online http://oxforddictionaries.com/ defines farther as “at, to, or by a great distance (used to indicate the extent to which one thing is distant from another)”.
To see these words in action, please take a look at the sentences below:
- No more lessons until further notice.
- Further to the letter I sent last week……
- We ventured further afield the second time we went to Spain.
- The pub is one mile farther down the road.
Just before posting this blog, I found a brilliant site called Quick and Dirty Tips http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/further-versus-farther.aspx which suggests that “If you can’t decide which one to use, you’re safer using further because farther has some restrictions”. The link above is worth a read, as I found the explanations and examples of these two words very easy to follow.
