I don’t know why I hesitate before writing the word occasionally (there – I did it again!). The correct spelling has just not stuck in all these years; if I could just remember that it’s got two ‘c’s, I would know that one ‘s’ followed. On research, this isn’t one that’s been blogged about much, but according to Spellcheck.net there are nine misspelled variations of this word with the top three being:
- occassionally – 34%
- occasionaly – 12%
- ocassionally – 11%
I admit to typing number 3 and possibly number 1, although I do know that it hasn’t got a double ‘c’ as well as a double ‘s’, so I usually get it right 50% of the time.
So, are there any easy ways to remember this word?
As a continuation of the theme of the word necessary (never eat chocolate, eat smoked salmon ary….see yesterday’s Note 276 – Mnemonics for the word necessary) I have made up a mnemonic for half of the word occasionally, by remembering it in conjunction with two of my favourite foods as follows:
only consume chocolate and strawberries
Do you have a way of remembering the word occasionally, or are there any other words that you tend to struggle with?
Until tomorrow…

It’s interesting how we all have different words we stumble on. It took me years to spell “a lot” as two words, I would always write alot. My brain just wanted it that way.
Hi Janet. Yes I find it interesting too. I sometimes hesitate before blogging about certain words that I haven’t quite mastered, as I think that other people might have worked it out years ago! Thanks for taking the time to comment.
