Note 68 – Relative adverbs

For the background to my writing challenge, please read my first blog by clicking the following link – http://wp.me/p1x6Ui-4. If you would prefer to dive straight into note 68, then please read on…

What is a relative adverb?

John Seely, in his book The Oxford A-Z of Grammar & Punctuation, explains that a relative adverb is “an adverb that introduces a relative clause”.  There are three relative adverbs:

  • When
  • Where
  • Why

Examples of relative adverbs in sentences

My examples show the relative adverb followed by the relative clause:

  • Snickers chocolate bars were called Marathons when I was younger
  • She didn’t seem to like the hotel where I had stayed last year
  • You don’t seem to understand why I don’t like working here

Hope you have enjoyed today’s blog – please feel free to comment if you wish.  As mentioned before I am happy to take requests on the subject of grammar/punctuation/writing tips or similar.

Thank you to my regular readers/subscribers for your continued support and a big welcome to any new readers.

Until tomorrow…

About Sandra Madeira

I am a working mum and entrepreneur with a passion for writing, coaching, mentoring and inspiring others. Subjects I tend to blog about are life skills, parenting, decluttering, worklife balance, career etc. I’ve been on a decluttering mission for years creating space in my house, garden and mind. In 2020 I challenged myself to declutter every day for a whole year and write about it daily. After that success I took on a challenge to change my career from accountant to life coach, and in early 2024 set up my own company. I continue to keep up with the decluttering, and now write daily about my home life and coaching business. Have a good day!
