How Google can help you find synonyms
The reason why I blogged about synonyms yesterday was to prepare you for the advanced google tip that I have learnt. Please revisit note 70 if you are unfamiliar with the term ‘synonym’.
As we all know, Google is a very popular search engine and currently the largest, according to Tarja Moles in her article called ‘Google-friendly’ (cited in Writing Magazine, Aug 2011). One of the advanced tips mentioned in the article, which will save you time when searching in Google, is as follows:
“Did you know that Google has a feature whereby inserting a tilde sign (~) immediately before your keyword automatically searches for the keyword as well as its synonyms?” (Tarja Moles, Writing Magazine, Aug 2011).
Example
If you were looking for storage boxes in Google, by typing the entry ‘storage ~boxes’ in the Google search box, this would bring results including storage containers, bins and so on.
Hope you will find use for this. It’s been quite fun playing around with it to come up with an example for this blog – have a try yourself. As always, your comments are welcome. I blog daily so please don’t forget to come back tomorrow to learn more. As mentioned in earlier blogs, I am happy to take requests on the subject of grammar/punctuation/writing tips or similar (I do have 296 days remaining in my challenge!). .
Wishing you a great day.
Until tomorrow…
Sandra
