I’ve often wondered what a copywriter actually does and thought I would do a bit of research today. Copywriting or ‘writing copy’ is the act of writing or editing content for a living. “Commercial writers or copywriters have been around since the world became literate” says Allena Tapia in her post What exactly is a copywriter? (About.com). She explains that the ‘content’ they write is usually of the sales or marketing kind, although Wikipedia explain that a copywriter can also be called a content writer “if the purpose is not ultimately promotional”.
Work a copywriter does “can also appear in social media content including blog posts, tweets, and social-networking site posts” says Wikipedia. You can have freelance copywriters (entrepreneurs) who make money from their own work, or staff copywriters working for corporations. The aim is the same – to make information easily digestible to the reader; to transfer information to an individual in the most concise form via sources such as magazines, books or the web pages.
Experienced copywriters can entice readers with their words to get them to buy a product or service. An article on Socyberty.com called What are the secrets behind making businesses flourish?, defines web copywriting as a “unique representation of an idea to hook more and more readers”.
In another article on Socyberty.com called Enhance your business on the web with web copywriting, they explain that “everyone can write, but one needs to know the exact requirements of the business in order to write something that would give benefits in return”.
My thoughts: With my limited knowledge before today, I thought ‘I could be a copywriter’. Now, I’m sensing that you might need some sort of marketing qualification or at least lots of knowledge the particular business you are copywriting for in order to carry out the task effectively. I would like to have a go though.
If you know anyone that is a successful copywriter or know how to get started with copywriting, I would be interested in hearing from you. Thank you.
