Note 222 – Eight things to consider before creating a writing portfolio

I’ve recently been reading about setting up a writing portfolio. After a bit of a brainstorming session, I’ve put together a check list of things to think about before creating one:

  1. Where to put the portfolio.
  2. How often to up update it.
  3. What to put in the portfolio.
  4. Whether to create a word document with them all in for easy retrieval when writing to a client.
  5. Whether to have links in the document or copy the actual content (or do both).
  6. Who the target audience are (readers or potential clients?).
  7. To ensure the work displayed is a good mix of all chosen niches.
  8. Whether the best pieces of work should be saved anywhere other than online (as there may be a risk of losing them).

Where I’ve had articles or letters printed in magazines in the past, I have printed them out and placed them either on the wall or in a display folder. Now I’ve started blogging and publishing work (not only on my site but others) I don’t print anything off and only occasionally save them . So, my plan is to put my portfolio on one of my sites and back up all of my work.

Just stumbled upon a great article called ‘How to create a writing portfolio’ by Sharon Hurley Hall (website Get Paid to Write Online.com).  I like her idea of making PDF or Word samples available so that people can download and view your work.

Does anyone else have a online portfolio to display their writing or photos?

Hope you enjoyed today’s blog.

Until tomorrow…

About Sandra Madeira

I am a working mum and entrepreneur with a passion for writing, coaching, mentoring and inspiring others. Subjects I tend to blog about are life skills, parenting, decluttering, worklife balance, career etc. I’ve been on a decluttering mission for years creating space in my house, garden and mind. In 2020 I challenged myself to declutter every day for a whole year and write about it daily. After that success I took on a challenge to change my career from accountant to life coach, and in early 2024 set up my own company. I continue to keep up with the decluttering, and now write daily about my home life and coaching business. Have a good day!
