Note 239 – The word ‘Humbug’ and the term ‘Bah Humbug’

It’s Christmas Day and I want to spend time with my family, but staying true to my writing challenge, I will still provide a blog for you today – but it will be a short one.  I thought I would find out a little bit about the term Bah Humbug.  This is the character Ebenezer Scrooge’s famous catchphrase in Charles Dickens A Christmas carol, as mentioned on Wikipedia.  Scrooge’s meaning of this was to declare Christmas a fraud.

Wikipedia define the word humbug as an old term meaning ‘hoax‘ or ‘jest’.  When used as an exclamation is can also mean ‘nonsense’, but when used as a noun it means an ‘imposter’.  The word was apparently used as student slang as far back as 1791. Humbug is also a type of candy according to Wikipedia.

A recent and related story about the phrase Bah Humbug is on Daily Mail online, where a poor postman was stripped of his santa suit by the U.S. Postal Service for not following the dress code.  He’d been dressing up for years as well.  Enjoy!

Have a great day everyone.

Until tomorrow…

About Sandra Madeira

I am a working mum and entrepreneur with a passion for writing, coaching, mentoring and inspiring others. Subjects I tend to blog about are life skills, parenting, decluttering, worklife balance, career etc. I’ve been on a decluttering mission for years creating space in my house, garden and mind. In 2020 I challenged myself to declutter every day for a whole year and write about it daily. After that success I took on a challenge to change my career from accountant to life coach, and in early 2024 set up my own company. I continue to keep up with the decluttering, and now write daily about my home life and coaching business. Have a good day!
